Lithium Antimony Thiomalate is a veterinary injection primarily used for its anti-fibrotic and antiprotozoal properties.

Uses:

  • Papillomatosis (Warts): This is one of the most common and well-documented uses, particularly in cattle and horses, and also in dogs. It helps in the regression and shedding of papillomas (warts) and other fibrous growths. The probable mechanism of action is its anti-fibrosis activity.
  • Tropical Nasal Granuloma (Schistosomiasis): Used in cattle for the treatment of this condition.
  • Filariasis and Leishmaniasis: Also indicated for the treatment of these parasitic diseases, particularly in dogs.
  • Mammillitis in Buffaloes: It has been used as part of a combination therapy for mammillitis, a condition causing teat inflammation and necrosis, in she-buffaloes, attributed to its anti-fibrosis effect.

Dosage and Administration (Deep Intramuscular, unless specified):

  • Nasal Granuloma (Cattle): Typically 20 ml deep IM on 2 to 3 occasions at intervals of one week.
  • Papillomatosis (Cattle and Horses): 15 ml deep IM on 4 to 6 occasions at intervals of 2 days. As the warts necrose, they should be enucleated and the raw surfaces dressed with an antibacterial agent.
  • Papillomatosis (Dogs): Dosage can start around 0.5 ml IM and gradually increase by increments of 0.5 ml up to 2.5 ml. Injections are typically given on alternate days for 4 to 6 occasions.
  • Visceral Schistosomiasis: 20 ml deep IM (2 to 3 injections, one injection per week).

Important Note: The injection should be given deep intramuscularly (IM). Subcutaneous (S/C) deposition of the solution might result in an area of lightening around the injection site. It is crucial to administer the drug under the supervision of a veterinarian.

Side Effects:

While generally considered effective for its indicated uses, some potential side effects or considerations include:

  • Local Irritation: The drug has been noted to cause some local irritant effect at the injection site, which may last for several days.
  • Ineffectiveness in some cases: In certain instances, particularly with canine oral papillomatosis, Lithium Antimony Thiomalate alone may not be effective, and other or combination therapies might be required.
  • Necrosis: Care should be taken to ensure the solution does not escape into surrounding tissue to avoid necrosis.
