About BOVICORT-D® Injection
BOVICORT-D is a potent, fast-acting synthetic corticosteroid containing Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate, a highly effective glucocorticoid. Each ml contains 4 mg of Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate, providing strong anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and immunosuppressive properties essential for treating various conditions in animals.
Key Uses
BOVICORT-D is indicated for a wide range of conditions in livestock and other animals, including:
- Inflammatory Conditions:
- Musculoskeletal: Arthritis, bursitis, laminitis, sprains, myositis, tendonitis, acute traumatic conditions.
- Respiratory: Allergic bronchitis, equine COPD (heaves), certain forms of pneumonia.
- Skin: Allergic dermatitis, eczema, pruritus (itching).
- Other Inflammations: Mastitis, endometritis, local inflammatory reactions.
- Allergic Reactions: Severe allergic reactions, anaphylactic shock, urticaria (hives), angioedema, insect stings/bites.
- Immune-Mediated Diseases: As an immunosuppressant in conditions like immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) and certain autoimmune disorders.
- Metabolic Disorders:
- Bovine Ketosis: Effective in the treatment of primary bovine ketosis by promoting gluconeogenesis.
- Pregnancy toxemia in ewes.
- Shock & Stress: Adjunctive therapy in managing various forms of shock (e.g., anaphylactic, traumatic, surgical) and severe stress conditions.
- Neurological Conditions: To reduce cerebral edema or swelling in spinal cord trauma.
- Supportive Therapy: In various debilitating conditions where anti-inflammatory and stress-reducing effects are beneficial.
Dosage and Administration
BOVICORT-D is for Intramuscular (IM) or Intravenous (IV) use only. The dosage and duration of treatment are highly dependent on the species, the specific condition, its severity, and individual animal response.
General Guidelines (Strictly for Veterinary Guidance):
- Cattle:
- Ketosis: Typically 5 – 20 ml IM, often as a single dose.
- Inflammation/Allergy: 5 – 10 ml IM or IV.
- Horses: 2.5 – 5 ml IM or IV.
- Dogs:
- Anti-inflammatory: 0.1 mg/kg IM/IV.
- Immunosuppressive/Shock: Higher doses, up to 0.5 – 5 mg/kg IV in emergencies.
- Cats: 0.125 – 0.5 mg IM/IV.
IMPORTANT:
- Administer only under the direct supervision and prescription of a Registered Veterinary Practitioner.
- Dosage must be strictly adhered to as prescribed by the veterinarian.
- Prolonged treatment requires gradual tapering of the dose to avoid adrenal insufficiency.
How it Works (Pharmacological Actions)
Dexamethasone exerts its effects primarily by:
- Potent Anti-inflammatory Action: It stabilizes cellular and lysosomal membranes, inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators (like prostaglandins and leukotrienes), and suppresses the migration of inflammatory cells to the site of inflammation.
- Immunosuppression: It reduces the activity of the immune system, particularly by decreasing lymphocyte proliferation and function, making it useful in autoimmune diseases and allergic reactions.
- Metabolic Effects: It promotes gluconeogenesis (glucose production from non-carbohydrate sources), which helps in conditions like ketosis. It also influences protein and fat metabolism.
Important Safety Information & Side Effects
While effective, corticosteroids like Dexamethasone can have side effects, especially with prolonged or high-dose use:
- Adrenal Suppression: Long-term use can suppress the animal's natural adrenal function, requiring gradual withdrawal.
- Increased Thirst & Urination (PU/PD): Common side effect, especially in dogs.
- Increased Appetite: Can lead to weight gain.
- Gastrointestinal Upset: Ulceration can occur, particularly in susceptible animals.
- Immunosuppression: Can increase susceptibility to infections and mask their signs.
- Laminitis: Caution in horses predisposed to or with a history of laminitis.
- Muscle Wasting & Skin Thinning: With chronic use.
- Do NOT use in animals with: Active systemic fungal infections, corneal ulcers, or certain viral infections.
- Contraindicated during pregnancy: Unless the benefits outweigh the risks, as it may induce premature parturition.
WARNING:
- NOT FOR HUMAN USE. FOR ANIMAL TREATMENT ONLY.
- If solution is not clear or has suspended particles, please do not use & return for replacement.
- Multidose Vial - Maximum Ten withdrawals.
